Painting wieghts problem

Ok heres the thing I have a complete textured mesh and I have a skeleton ,but after I bind the skeleton to the mesh and then try to paint wieghts to the various joints I get a fatal exception and maya crashes.I have tried a skeleton with IK and without and still no go.When binding I used complete skeleton and closest joint with a max distance of 3.Any ideas of what the problem is or how to solve it would be appreciated thanks.
