Approximation ...

When applying Approximation to a NURBS object for Mental Ray rendering can I assign both types of Approximation (Surface and Trim Curve) to the entire object or do I have to apply them to their respective surfaces separately. Reading the Maya online guide it states that each type of Approximation ONLY affects that particular type of surface. Does this mean it ignores the other surface types if applied globally.
