New gpus, new build, 3d compatability

Hi folks,

building a new system and thinking about gpu's. I would like a pc that is good for gaming and 3d; looking at cards, the 9800gtx+ and hd4870 are in my price range.

Really wanted to get the 4870 for pound to performance ratio but have been put off by some negative forum posts elsewhere about it's 3d app compatibility (esp maya) and was wondering if anyone here hade experience of it?

Would plan to run it with vista 64 and would really like to know if anyone here has run the ati with maya/houdini/zbrush.

cheers

Not used that card, though Zbrush dosent care about cards its all on the CPU and RAM.

ATI's generally, not the fires, have a few glitches but nothing major, it might be worth keeping an eye on forums for any reviews

Hi gster,

I've read more and am going to stick with nvidia. Say zbrush for example - the card doesn't affect performance (speed/poly count) but it does still output the image - and it causes problems in zbrush and mudbox too (from what I've read - delayed stroke updating being one example).

There are alternate posters who say this doesn't happen for them, but there are more who say it does so it's the 9800gtx+ for me.

cheers
