Easy question - cutting a hole in a plane...

Can anyone help me. I cannot figure this out Im a newbie but I know the answer must be really simple....

Im trying to cut a circular hole out of a cube which ive narrowed to an almost plane like shape but cannot for the life of me figure out how to make this work....

Any ideas ?

You could make the hole shape you need out of a cylinder or another square (whatever shape) then cut it out using a difference boolean
