Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

Bender

I'm gonna try to model Bender from Futurama, since it's a rather simple model, and I've never did a whole character before. Planning to learn something about skeletons and such also... he's probably's been done 1000's of times before, but as a Futurama fan I feel it's my obligation to make him :p

Nice start, eh?

Hahahaha, it is really beginning to look like Bender from Futurama!! user added image Great progress so far on the Bender model so far, DJBlazer! user added image Only thing I notice is that the funnel area where the eyes are could be slightly larger along with the eyes themselves...it could just be me though... and they should also be just slightly lowered a little more on the face...but otherwise that keep up the good work! It's a shame they terminated the creation of new episodes though...

thanks for the critics CGPMaya84!

I've some of the proportions and converted every NURBS surface to polys, I dont like NURBS

Starting to look pretty good now, I think

Some metal material added. I think I'm pretty done here, so if not anyone has anything to criticise I'm gonna go try to rig.

Awesome work, DJ! It really looks a lot like a 3-D version of bender! user added image I would also like to see a cell-shading version of Bender to give it more of the cartoon feel! I love the metal texture on him though! user added image You know what would be cool? Is if you somehow put him into a scene of Futurama! :p

thanks CGP... Tried with a couple of cell shaders, but it didn't turn out that well, so I'll stick to the real thing :p Gonna try to rig him now, and then I'll see if I can put him in a Futurama environment.....

I've now sucessfully (sort of) rigged my first character. Haven't modified the weights for the wrap deformer yet, so he gets a little distorted in some places of course. Also some crap with the left fingers, but I'm getting there. A nice matrix pose for ya :p

I can't quite tell from your images, so forgive me if I'm misjudging your model, but it almost looks like you've made his eyes flat. Bender's eyes are like rounded cylinders. There are lots of episodes where he "zooms in" on a "robot floozy" and his eyes just stretch out of his head. I can't tell if that's how your Bender's eyes are, but if not, I think that's a detail you might want to look into.

Otherwise, it looks just like him. Great work. user added image
