softbody whiskers

In the seal project I was working on, the textbook called for making the seals whiskers a soft body, weighting them, and making the original shape a goal.
They are a simple nurbs object curved downward and using a texture as opacity to make the individual whiskers.
Because the text was written for a much earlier version of maya, the tools used to do this would seem to be different.
Can someone tell me what must be done to accomplish this in maya 6.5?

Hey...you are talking about salty right?...I did this one a while ago with the newest book (learning maya foundation 6)....it's still pretty much the same thing....like you said.....using a nurbs cylinder....creating softbody....setting goal weigths, adding gravity and then finally adding a spring to the soft body....hope that helped...have fun
