Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.
I'd like to learn to rig and animate both after the textures have been finalised. Wonder if any competitions will involve those elements?
Back to dragon scale reference hunting
well, I've had some time today to finish off the current textures.
samurai:
added detail to the arms, finished the feet and hands off. all hand drawn except the japanese symbols and the blade
dragon:
added claws to the feet, tidied the body up a little and lowered the colour slightly. all hand drawn except the mottled effect inside the wings
I think next time I'd draw them tonally (black, white and greys) before adding layers and bringing the colour out separately.
just a metallic and scaley dragon to do
I just started on the metallic dragon, here's a 5 minute rough of the general layout. Probably going to have a segmented body and then everything will be attached and highly chromed.
This probably wont go well with the samurai unless I can get it really highly contrasted in chrome...
lowlights and highlights will be added another day
cheers joopson, I think there are some far better models in the competition though
gamester - thanks for the compliment Looking back at it all there are definately areas which could be greatly improved but being the 1st proper textures I've done then I'm happy
wow is all I can say ...the detail in the samuri and the sword and everything in general wow. Makes me want to learn maya more and more. I just wish I could figure out how to do some of it ..I am just learning and love it. I have maya basics from digital tutors and the frog and dog from here.
you are very good at modeling and doesnt look like it takes you anytime at all. I love the simplisity of it all. I love the colors ..
just in awe.
one day maybe I can be that good. I would think you would be type to write a tutorial or they ask you too ...just shocking how good that is ..it does look like it could go into a game .
Just stick with it and try and do a little every day or so but dont burn yourself out with too much. I'm trying to limit myself to one area at a time, first was modelling (which still needs lots of work on) then texturing (which was really fun - I love pixel pushing!) then who knows what next? Do simplymaya do rigging challenges??? (hint hint)
Tutorials would be a great goal to achieve. I think you need loads of experience like Jay or Mckinley before you can do things like that. One day tho....
Started blocking in the main areas to be shaded. Still need fine detail adding as well as sharpening and some contrast altering to bring out the metallic look.
A lot to do...
oh and a quick play I did yesterday of the dragon with horns and some scaley bits. I like the additions (untextured yet) but let me know what you think
The additions are perfect. In particular the horns create some real interest. Good call! Almost gives him a ram type feel ... like you could expect to get a headbutt!
