in the normal mode (without smooth), there're no such "lines" on the face. Only with smoothing or polygons->normals->softer is this "effect" visible...
I generally set all the faces to the outside (or front whatver its called)
Then I select the edges that are being bad and do a polygons -> smooth (to all soft)
Sometimes its an idea to delete all your history on it after setting the faces to front and then try the soften edges.
