difference between fti and xpm

and I have followed the instructions, but after I have done so , the shader does not seem to show up anywhere. I have looked in the hyperashade but cannot find it. I suspect the problem is because in my icons folder, the files are all fti files, but the supplied icon is xpm. what can I do about that?
