Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

thanks for the helpguys, but im no nearer to deciding which to get. If anyone has a link for a pc to buy as it is with the decent quadro gfx card, and the necessary spec for it to handle maya that would be great.

I am naive to actually fitting stuff in them myself, so i want it all in.plase explain in laymans terms.

where is the maya site you refer to which tells about gfx cards?

Also if you guys bought a pc ready built wehere from? pc world, currys etc are rubbish. Will i be able to in the future if i save monet be able to add a better gfx card or an additional one?

Heres the page with the qualification charts

https://www.alias.com/glb/eng/support...ware/index.jsp

This page also has some PC specs on with manufacturers links etc.

With £1000 to spend you might be pushed to get a PC with a decent quatro card in as as well as a good processor/ram/motherboard/monitor etc, as most ready made PC's at this price are more for gaming. I very much could be wrong as i've not really looked as this price range (as i'm pricing up a new PC myself) You could well be best of looking at a gooe gforce and searching forums to see if they work with Maya.

Hope this helps you out

On the same charts, but further up

Some examples copied and pasted,

Boxx 3DBOXX R1

Dell Precision Workstation 210, 410, 610

Compaq Professional Workstation 6000

Think at the end of the day its up to you, there was a thread on CG talk regarding PC's and Maya but i dont think anyone will commit to a system as one mans meat is another mans poison.

hi, im no good with specs as well, but what you could do to save quite a bit of money is go for an old chunky monitor instead of a flat one. I got a 21" monitor for free, because uni wanted to spend a fortune on new flat displays and throw all old ones out. And thy are fine 1600x1200 resoltion...
I bet there are a lot of places getting rid of their old equipment. This could be a couple of bucks you could put in a better graphics card, more ram etc.
If space is an issue a chunky one is obviously not a solution. But otherwise it might be worth a thought.

happy choosing

just to clarify - done a bit of readin (rare)

u can i was wrong but they r expensive corsiar cost £471
for 2gb (2x 1gb sticks) ur motherboard has to support dual channel ram , also u need two mathing ram sticks that r certified to run in dual channel otherwise ur mobo treats it like single channel
