Separate Faces

Good morning. I am doing the Car Modeling Tutorial of the BMW. I am attempting to separate the hood from the body. When I select the faces of the hood and use the command separate I get the error saying "Error: polyToSubd2 has only one piece. Ignored". I am wondering if there is a way correct this and to separate the hood from the body when I am getting this error message.

And it is a poly object. It says in the Channel window subTessShape1 when it is selected. I do not believe I have Tessellated the model, as it does not appear to be.

Thanks!!

You have to extract the faces you want to separate first. The extract command is under the "Edit Polygons" menu. Before you do this make sure you have "Keep faces together" on.
