Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

is it a bad idea to start messing with 3d? hell no

I got into it for a hobby when i was studying programming at college as it allowed me to be more creative, been doing it ever since as a hobby. That was about 3.5 years ago.

As you aren't very experience in 3d, my advice would be to keep it simple and be prepared to be very patient. don't expect to be able to model Aki Ross from Final Fantasy next month. Also do as many tutorials as you can find.

Oh and welcome aboard

I'm not sure what you're asking as far as "bad ID" goes. If you're talking about the license number you are supposed to obtain to install Maya, then you must contact Alias|Wavefront about that. If you're just talking about beginning modeling, texturing, and whatnot, I would suggest going through a few tutorials, which can be found here at SimplyMaya. Ask question about what you're trying to do and we'll do our best to answer.

maya is a damn big package.... it has modelling, animation, shading, texturing, phew!!! just to name a few... and they are further divided into sub-categories... trax editor, graph edit, blah blah... but if you learn it with interest(which i am sure you have), it is pretty "easy".. give it some 6-7 months and you will start modelling and animation in no time...
