Ive made a model, how do I animate it?

Ive checked the stickies and the F1 Help in Maya, but none of them go into any depth on the subject. Ive created a model of a little spaceship, but I dont know how to create a motion trail and animate it! It just keeps saying "No geometry found to create snapshot." How do I fix this? How do I animate it? I just want to do a basic first animation, such as doing a loop, or just flying straight up in the air. I know this is an ultimate nooby question, but atleast its in the right area :/
