Click outside manipulators (a la XSI)?

Hello!
I've been using XSI for the past 5 years or so and have just got into Maya.

I'm wondering if there is a preference/option that allows the user to transform the manipulators without having to actually click-drag them? In XSI, there is the option to translate/rotate/scale by using one of the 3 mouse buttons which each represent X, Y, Z.

Is such an option available in Maya?

Thanks for your help!

I'm pretty sure that it isn't a default in maya, but i think if you would go to the hotkeyeditor you can set something like that up manual.
It will probably require that you"ll have to use a key in combination with the mouse buttons but it is the closest you will get to the best of my knowledge.
