Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Started on the feet. They are a combo of rhino elephant feet. Still need to add a nice sharp line between the toes and pull out some wrinkels, on the whole foot..

I want to ask Kurt a question:

Can you tell us about the difficulties, in making this perticular model?

Wow.... Good question undseth.

First off with this model I tried a new technique, By starting off the face and body in Nurbs patches, I usally start off with poly shpere's or cubes.

I found that nurbs help me get a better amount of detail faster but then got a bit fustrating trying to stitch and align all the patches, so after a few hours of trying to algin all the pacthes I decided to go to what I know best POLY's and Sub-ds.

After the convershion to polys, I had a few little problems. There was not an even number of edges on the different patches, but all it took was a bit of time to delete the extra edges, so I had a nice edge that lined up on the whole face. I also lost a bit of the detail in the model, but that was not biggy.

The hardest part of this and any model I make is really trying to give it a personallity. What I mean when I say that is being able to give the model a presence so when someone views it he/she can immediatly get a feeling about the model and what the model hopefully convies (looks like a bad mean creature or looks and feels like a curious little kid)

The other hard part I find is adding the amount of detail I want. Im still learning a lot about textures so im still in the mind frame to model the wrinkels and folds rather than reliey on painted UV maps to get all the wrinkels. Im sure once I learn some more about textureing i'll be able to get the results a bit faster.. I'm just a perfectionist=).

Lastly... doing eye lids and lips, they drive me crazy=) heheheheh

Hopefully I answered you question undseth, I know your eager to try organic modeling just let me kow if I can help.

Ps sorry about the spelling/grammer i'm "DISLECSICK", and my proof reader is at work=)

preproduction

wow the model looks amazing! You don't have any preliminary sketches do you? I don't know if you rotoscoped it or used image planes from a drawing... if you did we would sure love to see 'em!

Ok the body is done, I had to make the body a little higher in geomety to than I like to attach the head because I did the head first and was little higher in geomerty because of the wrinkels.

I'm going to do the body with the head not attached with a collar so the body dosen't need to be smoothed once to match up with the level 0 on the head=).
