Introduction to Maya - Rendering in Arnold
This course will look at the fundamentals of rendering in Arnold. We'll go through the different light types available, cameras, shaders, Arnold's render settings and finally how to split an image into render passes (AOV's), before we then reassemble it i

Cutting shapes from Polygonal plane

Hi All,

This is my first post and I'm very new to Maya. Still trying to teach myself. I've run into a problem that feels like it should be simple to work through using online help. But so far I've had no luck.

I'm trying to to cut, or knock out, vector shapes originally created in Illustrator (and imported into Maya) out of a larger flat surfuce (see screenshot). I've tried extruding the illustrator shapes (the horse shoe shape and 0's) and the polygonal plane and then using Booleans to cut the shapes out of the plane but it didn't work. I also tried the Make Hole Tool. But nothing has worked so far.

Can anyone offer a solution? I'm still getting my footing with Maya so clear steps (meaning simple instructions) would be a big help. Thanks!

Sorry, for some reason I can't seem to post the screenshot to this page. I've tried attaching it as png, jpeg, and gif. The file is only 132KB. I'll check around the forums and see if I can find info on what's going wrong in the meantime. Thx.

Thanks for responding Miss Nova. I did browse to the file through that section and select it but for some reason when I clicked Preview Reply or Submit Reply the image wouldn't show up. Even now with this post it won't attach the image. Oh well.

Thankfully I just fixed the issue a few mintues ago. There was some kind of problem with the original vector art I was given. After going back and retracing the bits of vector art that wouldn't bevel and saving the vector art down to Ilustrator version 8, my problem was solved.
