exporting skin weight maps

how do you export and import skin weight maps?
I found the options in the edit smooth bind skin menu and I'm trying to do it, because I'm rigging a few characters that are very similar. I keep getting an error saying it's the wrong file type when I import them, although the file it wants is not an option in the export file types.
Anyone know what to do?

Change the file format in photoshop, paint try tagra or at worse a jpeg not the best format to use but I dont think I have ever had a problem importing one of them..........dave
