render view problem

Hello, I'm relatively new to maya and still learning. I'm having a problem rendering.

My cameraview looks like this:

user added image

and my render view looks like this:

user added image

how do I change my renderview to have the same nice subdivisions as the cameraview?

If you're using the Maya software renderer then that is normal because it doesn't support the smooth preview, however, Mental Ray does.

how can I change it to use mental ray? The 3 options I see are:

maya software
maya hardware
maya vector

maya hardware seems to render it smoothly but my shadows end up pixelated and boxy.
