Introduction to Maya - Rendering in Arnold
This course will look at the fundamentals of rendering in Arnold. We'll go through the different light types available, cameras, shaders, Arnold's render settings and finally how to split an image into render passes (AOV's), before we then reassemble it i

Robosapien

6 Different Kung Fu moves, heh. My apologies if anyone has already selected Robosapien, -I checked the current threads and did not see it. I will be glad to change my selection if there is a conflict. This will be very difficult for me, but I look forward to it. All my best to everyone, and my Thanks to David and all here at SimplyMaya!

A very basic start; found a front facing image to reference from > the toy size is 34.3 cm height, attempting to model to scale (will be using mentalray, Maya 2012) > put in some basic shapes > Duplicate Special Instance > next, create horrible mess :oD .

Although I haven't really done anything, I have been learning :-) . The 'Set Project' had me confused when it seemed like it was not doing what I thought it would do, but I hope I've set it up correctly now with the 'Project Window.'

Tomorrow is our Local Maya User Group meeting (Minneapolis). I believe Mike MedicineHorse (awesome individual) will be demo-ing some items from Hybrid Medical Animation.

Looks like a good start for a mess mate...I would however move your ref image back off the grid so your model and it do not clash...

cheers bullet

Good start so far! I've checked out Hybrid's demo reel in the past, very cool stuff. Are you associated with the company?

Thank You Stwert :-) ! I agree, Hybrid has very cool work! I was working at ghOst Productions, another medical animation studio. So I end-up knowing a lot of the people from the local medical animation studios (and they all love Maya :-D ).

And my latest (always wishing I had more time);

I'm pretty slow, -but I'm trying to learn the new features for Maya 2012 (and get in the habit of using 'em).
Tons more to do. I hope the Maya 2012 Bonus Tools get posted soon : ) . I've downloaded the Maya 2012 Hot Fix, but... I'm nervous to install it. For the Macs, it means completely uninstalling Maya 2012 & then installing the Hot Fix. Currently Maya 2012 is working, so... :>S hmmm... time to do a Time Machine restore point and grow a pair :-D .

Getting a bit sloppy :-) , lots to clean-up & improve on. Crits and feedback is always welcomed.

Some areas of frustration; the 'spinning beach ball' delay (just about every action is affected with a .5 second to 5 second delay...). I remember this issue with Maya 2011 on the Mac, before the service pack there were lots of 'fixes' for this (install Maya on a new user account, run a script, etc.). I'll run the Hot Fix and hope it takes care of this issue.

The Maya windows always remain on top; (example) when I pop open email I see this :-S

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/477599/MayaWindowPain.png

As far as I know, I have to move the Maya windows or close them to get them out of the way (doesn't matter which program is currently active, the Maya windows stay on top). 2011 had the same issue.
I don't think this was an issue on the Window systems.

PC or Mac, it doesn't matter to me :^) , but (if the Hot Fix doesn't fix these little issues) I'll shift over to my Windows system and see how Maya 2012 does.

The good news, I've been luv'n the learning. And the users on this forum = AWESOME :^D !

looking pretty fancy!

as far as i'm aware that window issue is impossible to program on purpose!
are you using the beta version of lion?

i always get the spinning beach ball after lunch at work... so i know how frustrated you must be...

what are the hardware specs of your computers?

Smart choice Dave, I've attempted to do the same but I always fall off the wagon :-) . Thank you!

Good question Chirone, I'm using 10.6.7 on a Quad-Core, 12 GB DDR3, GTX 285. I haven't tried Lion yet (although I am guilty of being very curious). The Windows system I'll be using is... Boot Camp of Vista 64bit. If I get a chance/time/money/leprechaun granting wishes/etc. I'd go with a Windows 7 64bit, good ATI or Nvidia card. Not that I'm saying one is better than the other, -maybe best for me to stay on target with the Modeling Challenge & my apologies for wandering from it <:-D <-- that's me wearing my dunce cap.

I sincerely appreciate commiserating with you on the spinning beach ball, Thank You! (so frustrating, hahahaha /insane laughter).

My nephew was kind enough to lend me his Robosapien (Thank You Sammy!), -which has made a big difference. I had a lot wrong, reminds me of working with clients <:^D . But, I'll be glad to make the corrections & I certainly need the practice.

I ran the Hot Fix, all went well. The window on top & lag issues are still present, although the lag issue seems to be related to the amount of time Maya has been running. If I restart the Mac, Maya runs without the lag issue for ~ 2-4 hours (restarting Maya doesn't seem to get rid of the lag, but a system restart does). Works out well for making sure to take a break.

It's always a lot easier when you have the real toy in front of you. I find that if i have an image plane of the object i'm modelling i'll often end up ignoring it after a while and just refer to the real object

the back looks pretty fancy!

the rumour for macs is that you don't need to restart them to make them go faster.
however, i just don't see any proof to that.
