Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Where's the teapot primitive, polygon or NURBS?

I have been using Maya for a couple of days now, and was wondering where the teapot primitive is? I know 3D Studio Max has one, and that some other packages have this primitive built-in to them, and was wondering why Maya never got around to adding this primitive, not that it is really a big deal, but just more of a question out of curiosity.

cheers

Because its pointless. All the others are useful or are good jump off points. Just because its the first documented item created in 3D (Im sure the cube beat it somewhere) does not mean its useful.

There is a teapot brush if that helps at all... which you can convert to polys. I suspect that was their little historical nod.

I think the teapot is more of a "hello world" model. It's handy for shader and lighting tests because it's more interesting than a cube? Apart from that, as mentioned, it's just a shout out to CG roots and not all that useful.

Surely it's not a primitive?

Still, that wouldn't stop me from adding an elephant primitive if I could... I wonder if I could write a script to do that....

Although now that I think about it, a teapot could look quite a bit like an elephant.

In Lightwave, there used to be an eagle in a barrel primitive.

That's absurd and brilliant at the same time.

Any idea why?
