Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

How to combine 2 Nurbs Surfaces ?

Hello Maya-Community,

I have a logo, built out of bezier curves, and I offset the curves to get thikness then I just planar and loft them.
Now that I have seperate Nurbs Surfaces I tried to combine and later convert into Polygons so I could smooth them. But there is an issue:

1. I rebuilt the surfaces in u & v direction. The middle-surface (loft) of the logo I can select the isoparm to make a curve out of it and later I could attach to the side-part. Somehow I can't select the outter Isoparm of the second surface(planar).

2. So I tried to convert the Nurbs Surfaces to Polygons. Then combined all parts of the logo which now are Polygons >edit Mesh>merge Components (in the options I tried threshold from 0.1 - 2000 witch merge for two vertices checked and not. Though no Success).

What else can I do to get one single Object to smooth mesh on it later ? I also tried to merge Edges without any result. The meshes keep staying seperate.

Ctbram is the best man for this but he might not be around, could you show a shot of the nurbs and what you converted..............dave

This the Logo I'm trying to match

This is the loft and planar Surface which I've already rebuilt to attach both together. But I know I can't attach planar and loft Surface. I need to pick the outter Isoparm from each Surface and make a Curve from one of it,then loft and attach to other Surface. But the problem is I can not pick the outter Isoparm from one of the Surfaces. It's not working . What to do?

Hello Dave and thank you for the links.
I tried Bevelplus but the Surfaces still are separate. Honestly I don't know where I can project curve on a poly surface.
Edit : Now with the Bevelplus and poly output I have one single object. I cleaned up the mesh a little and tried to smooth and the result looks like this

Edit(2): I've also tried to triangulate the outside face which has no divisions but smooth preview and smooth command don't work correct. Any suggestions for this error ?

I don't like Nurbs too. Pollys because you can smooth them. And I finished my work in spite of smoothing issues.

Honestly, you're probably shooting yourself in the foot using Maya's NURBS. The poly tools have been updated and they're more versatile and far less painful in comparison.
