Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Memory vs Speed (Graphics card)

I'm looking for a new graphics card, as my PC has pretty much commited suicide this last month, and can't decide between a few different cards.

The card will be used for lots of gaming, and a bit of Maya'ing. The 560Ti is faster (for games), but the EVGA 560SC has more memory. Does memory matter much with Maya? The Zotac card also has 48 more CUDA cores, which will help with rendering.

Both free shipping, Newegg charges sales tax (+$22.10)

As a side note, the Zotac card will work well for a cooling overhaul, as I plan to do this to it in the future (once I've rebuilt my PC)

As far as I know, textures are loaded into the video card memory so more video RAM is definitely a plus. Did you check around for benchmarks?

In all benchmarks I could find the 560Ti is better.

Was kind of hoping no one had posted yet though, as that 560Ti is out of stock as of last night user added image

Found this though.

$153.89 shipped, and it's the overclocked version. Think may go for that, as long as it's in stock.

Another question. Once I get a new card, I plan to format and start fresh. I have Maya set up with custom shelves/viewport colours, so aside from the folder in my documents, what else should I back up, the entire Program Files folder, or bits of it?

Do you have your program files on a separate drive/partition from your data? If so, use clonezilla to create an image of your windows partition just in case you need to restore it. I don't think copying Program Files into a fresh install is going to work, I think you may need to install the programs again. Not sure though.

Everything's on the same drive, other than the stuff I've already backed up. Oh, and meant just the Maya folder in Program Files, not the entire Program Files folder, should have been more clear :p

I shouldn't think you'd need the maya program files folder... unless there's something I'm not thinking of. All your prefs, shelves, scripts, even some plugins will be in your documents folder.

Ok, cool. I thought the prefs/shelves were stored in the program folder.

Nice little guide, from the title I thought it would just say "install windows over windows" user added image

Only thing I really got out of it, though, was the CCleaner text file thing. I always just wrote down the programs I needed, and always ended up forgetting 20-30. This makes it much easier
