Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

UV Snapshot error troubleshooting

Hey y'all, got another snapshot problem I need help with.

So basically every time I try and take a UV snapshot, I get the "failed to open output file" error. I've seen other threads on this on many websites but only one thing has worked so far and it's deleting the preferences folder and allowing Maya to recreate them... however I really don't want to do this every time I need to take a UV snapshot.

I've tried changing the file name, location, file type... basically everything.

I do have the 3ds plugin installed as well... can anyone with this tell me if they've had a similar problem after installing the plugin?

Thanks in advance.

i am not really sure what the 3ds plugin has to do with UV snapshot, what file type are you saving the snapshot as ?

A Uv snapshot is just an image file of your objects uv layout so you need to select an image format i.e jpg, tiff, targa ect

You should not need to delete the preferences every time because if deleting the preferences solves the issue Maya would be using the new preference file it created henceforth.

This is why I am confused. I was thinking possibly the 3DS plugin was maybe messing with the preferences. I did everything correctly (I have done many UV snapshots with Maya thus far) but it just recently started doing this. I gave it a file name, tried adding the extension (.png/.tiff/etc), selected image format, changed file location, etc etc basically tried to alter every possible thing I could. I think maybe it was the .ma itself being glitchy? I haven't tried a snapshot with another file yet though.

Still so far the only thing that worked was deleting the preferences.

Thanks for your answer.
