Can someone point me to a fake-hair tutorial, please?

I am modeling a horse, and I want to make the tail and mane out of planes (and then turn the planes into cloth). I'm planning on using bump maps + transparency, but I'm not sure how the mask for transparency should be done (note I am using Corel, not Photoshop, but I could probably do the same thing on Corel).
Can someone give me a tutorial for how to create fake hair, please?

This is by far the most used tut in regards to low poly hair. Its how I learnt.

Thank you! The way it looks there seems quite realistic, should work just fine for white (not completely white, more like grayish) horse hair.

Transparency map doesn't work for the created hair though, what's up with it? I remember I've once used an alpha map to do clouds for an Earth model, but it's not working the same for the hair...

Edit: never mind, forgot to select Alpha is luminance.
