Rendering in the E-lerning Edition

I am rendering scenes in the Maya E_lerning edition 4.5. and I get very un smooth images.

I open the option render window and I pull up the resolution and still renders not smooth at all. It looks nicer in the shaded preview mode. Is it because of the e-learning edition is limited. Or I just making something wrong?

Any body had this problem before?
