Animation Grouping Prob

I have a cube made with other smaller cubes. (Rubik's basicly)

I need to group one side, so i can animate it rotateing on the center axis, then, rotate another group, for the same reason. The problem is, you cant have the same cubes in two groups...

Is there a way I could have it be in one group in the first 50 frames, rotate. Then join another group and rotate in the next 50 frames?

(Im preaty much solving a rubik's cube.)

I can't think how to do this with groups, but there is a sort of brute-force solution. Set all of the pivot points of the small cubes to the center of the entire cube. Then, when you're animating, just select the side you want and rotate them. They should rotate about the absolute center of the entire cube. You'll definitely have to edit the fcurves on them. One of my students did an entire Rubik's cube animation this way. Very quick and easy to work with.

One more thing: make sure you set your Rotate tool to Global and not Local. Try it and you'll see what happens.
