How to import only 1 obj into a scene?

Is there a way to merge (import) only 1 obj from a file that has many objects into a scene (another file)?

If my source file has many objects, I find I always have to open that file first, delete all the other objects I don't want (to be merged in another scene), save that file under a different name, then reopen my destination file and import the object from the file I have just saved. Is there a quicker way of importing only 1 object and not having ALL the objects in that file imported in as well?

thanks

I don't know if this helps, but you can export a particular object(s) in a complex scene by selecting it and the choosing File>export selection. That way you don't have to delete all the stuff you don't want.

Ya export works fine. was wondering if there was a way to cut down that extra step (am still used to the Max way of doing things - where in importing it gives you a list of scene objects to choose from)

apparently you can copy and paste across different files too!

thanks!
