Face wont delete

I have a face which wont delete regardless on a model. I converted to SubD's then back again, but when I converted back I was left with a duplicate polygon mesh over the existing one, though this mesh was combined with the original mesh :S, i deleted what I thought to be all the faces, but now when I select a vert it is clear that it is an unwanted face, but will not delete. I have tried deleting it, merging it with other verts, but still nothing, any ideas?
