This course contains a little bit of everything with modeling, UVing, texturing and dynamics in Maya, as well as compositing multilayered EXR's in Photoshop.

Are you sure the "select tool" didn't activate. All the select tool does it change your current tool back to the regular mouse.

I don't understand what you mean by left button panel. Do you mean the menus at the top or maybe you are talking about the right button panel. I once made a typo like that.

Sorry I'm still a noob and this may not be helpful. =(

I think that will work with nobody, because it's only function is selecting nothing more, just press q when you want to activate the selecttool or go to the left panel.

=) I'm glad I solved one of your problems. Here are a list of things that might make them work.

1. Make sure you select an object (Press Q and click on object) before clicking on the tool

2. Try increasing the size of the tool. After doing #1 pressing the "+" or "-" sign a couple of times (3-10 times)

Yeah stuff like that happens. In the middle of a project my undo button will just stop working...lol. Personally I think its my graphics card.
