Beer glass scene creation
This course contains a little bit of everything with modeling, UVing, texturing and dynamics in Maya, as well as compositing multilayered EXR's in Photoshop.

How to merge edges...???

I have partially modelled af simple man shape using the create poly tool, but now I have big troubles merging the edges between body and neck.

The edges at perfectly lined up againt each other but when using the merge edge tool it creates very very weird merges.

Can anyone explain my the method... ?

I can read the manual and I can easily make to simple box shapes merge. But why not my model. Is there a special thing that I have to remember in this case when using create poly tool?

It might be that you have a greater number of vertices on the head portion. Perhaps if you try making a few more cuts into the body section near the neck, then trying to combine edges, it might work. I usually merge vertices for models such as this and it works best when I have the same number of verts.

Wuhuu..!!

Looking carefully in the manual (under merging virtices though) i found what I was looking for:

"Edges will not merge if the normals of adjacent faces point in opposite directions. Try either of the following before performing the merge:

Select either of the adjacent faces and reverse the normals using the Reverse and Propagate mode. For details, see Reversing polygonal normals.

Merge the vertices, which will make the object nonmanifold. Perform a Cleanup on the object to remove the nonmanifold geometry and conform the normals. For details, see Cleaning up polygonal data."

I reversed the normals and everything went smooth as a babyass. user added image
