Sculpt Tool + a particular poly object = CRASH!!

Hello. Using Maya 8.5 on a Precision 690. 2Gigs of RAM. OS is Windows XP Pro.

OK. I have a scene with numerous elements.
I have one element, a head (currently in subdiv mode) and if I try to open the Sculpt On Geometry tool with that head selected, Maya closes the program with an error message.

Other elements in the scene can be selected and the Sculpt On Geo tool opens and works fine. I have to say I haven't checked every single element in the scene but the others I have checked present no problems.

Anyone have any ideas how to clean this up? I already went in to the hypergraph and deleted unused nodes. Also, in the scene I deleted all by type: history, and optimized the scene, all in an attempt to debug this scene.

Any help would be welcome. thanks, gang.
