painting color over textured nurbs surface

Im trying to paint on the textured nurbs surface(see attachment) but whenever i try to paint colors using the 3d paint tool nothing happens...what should I do to be able to paint parts of the textured surface?

You need UVs for this to work, I would paint a texture in some thing like photoshop.............dave

the image shown is part of a 3d model for which i only need part of 1 side painted with specific designs...does that make a difference?

So i basically have a 3d nurbs model(image 1) and I want to paint the designs that are on image 2 onto the grass texture of image 1

I dont use the 3d paint tool in maya but I think its just a case of painting on it so long as it has a file texture assigned to it................dave
