Default custom icon trouble

I am required to make a custom shelf button for a class. I made a little custom icon in Photoshop (32x32 pixels, @ 72dpi, indexed color, .bmp file). I put it in my icon folder, and it works great at home. When I take it to my school and put it in the icons folder (I actualy transport my ENTIRE 6.0 folder and replace it on my school compter), Maya says it's not the right kind of file and I get a blank box on my shelf - even though the function itself works fine - I'm missing my little custom icon.

Can anyone clue me in on why this won't work. My teacher doesn't seem happy.

Thanks in advance,
Phil
