HumanIK Vs Custom Rigg

I created a previous thread asking how to insert a mocap file into a custom rigg, however, I think this topic deserves a thread of its own.

After rigging the character, it looks like I can’t use just any mocap file and insert it in my custom rigg, unless I create my own mocap with motionbuilder. So, it seems this is a big disadvantage in my humble opinion. Or it isn’t?

Looking at HumanIK, it looks like that you can just import any mocap fbx file and insert it into the HIK rigg.
One way or the other, I am pretty confused about the advantages of using HumanIK versus custom rigg and vice versa.

I would love to hear your opinion on this.

Thank you and appreciated.
