image plane resolutions

Hey all-
I have an older video card and am having a bit of trouble with image planes. They basically work fine except for a couple of funky things...so I'm looking for some help.
When I click a point or move a camera the image really pixelates so I can't sometimes tell where to make the point I'm trying to make. Is this just my card...or is there another setting I'm missing?
My second problem is more a question...what resolution are people typically using for image planes....72dpi?...100dpi?...higher? I am aware that it differs from person to person, but when I zoom in to a small area of my image plane to do some detail work I can hardly tell what I'm seeing. My first fix would be a higher resolution, but since my card is a bit weak I was just wondering when resolution might become overkill?

I normally just use 72dpi. I haven't had a problem yet. Not sure about the pixellating you mentioned.. only thing I could think of would be your graphics card. You can try to increase the texture display detail, but if your graphics card is having trouble right now, it won't like increasing that.

at what physical size (pixel dimensions) are your planes usually MT?

depends on the image. If the image is 300x600 for example, I would make my planes 3.0 x 6.0. Just move the decimal points and you maintain the size resolution.
