mapping a spherical grid

Hi,
I'm trying to create a background similar to the on in the picture (top) form the X-men 2 web site.

I used spherical projection mapping onto a sphere to attain the effect, though i get funny lines near the bottom and it doesn't look as slick or smooth. How can i fix it?

The bottom section of mine reacts different the the xmen one..
