maya 64

was thinking of upgrading to a 64-bit os...so will maya be noticably be quicker or not

When you say "quicker" that could mean anything. Its not as simple as saying "Oh yah HUGE difference" without knowing your expectations and hardware configuration etc. It can solve your issues as easily as it can bring trouble.

issues with render times when i render large scenes especially with gi photons the damn thing takes hours i have
2gb ram
nvidia 8800gtx
intel dual core 2.0

without upgrading my hardware is there anyway i can reduce render times

yeah don't use so many photons...

maybe you can look at the tutorials that are all about 'faking' global illumination. haven't actually read them myself but they exist and give faster results than using global illumination

switching to a 64bit shouldn't make a different to the running time.

in fact it does depend on what you mean by faster
maya will still perform the same operations on the new system with better hardware than it did with the old one.
it might take less time but it still works at the same speed. (am i confusing you yet?)

but in terms of the time that it takes to complete a render changing from 32 to 64 probably wont make a difference, mainly because you're using a 32bit version of maya

or fake global illumination with normal lights

now that i think of it....the advantage of 64 bits is that you can handle larger numbers
i dont think it makes things faster

64Bit can handle large files.

I had to build a large containership into high detail, my file ended up 1.8 gigabytes. And i had no crashes or any other problem.

Do note ram is important.

when i had 32bit i had lots of problems lots of crashes.

my specs

Q6600 Quad core 2.6
Geforce pny 8800 gts
8 g ram crossair

Wait a sec...

I hope you do have a 64-bit proc otherwise a 64-bit OS would do very little...


If you want faster rendering, why not consider distributed rendering?

I would look more into the rendering process that your doing, I've never had a render that I needed to leave overnight (as in what you had with your chess set). I start to get worried if ot goes into an hour, and dial back the settings.

The comp you've got is'nt too bad.

To fully get the best out of 64 bit you would need to up the RAM to over 4 gig really.

When it comes to rendering its more down to the processor than anything.

CPU is for rendering speed
Ram is for file load.

I have one quick question to throw in here

will a 32bit operating system only handle 4gb of ram? and 64bit can handle up to 8gb ram? I keep getting the impression from some people I talk to that that's the case.

32 bit 3gigs
64 bit 8gigs or even more depending on your mainboard.

But you need Vista Ultimate to get 8 gigs. A normal home edition or home premium or even business will only give you 3 gigs.
When you have an Ultimate version you will be able to use all ram

I was just wondering. I'm still running XP on a 32bit system and was just curious as to how much ram is actually used. I only have 2gb installed at the moment.

4 gigs the max in 32 bit, This might help

Also if your taming the RAM beast you can convert all textures to files then save them as BOT files that frees up some RAM if you pushing it/

I thought that 64 bit vista home could take up to 8 gig, home premium 16 and business etc etc 128??
