Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Exellent man. The wire is perfect. can you make a close up on the boots with the wire?. Why are you using sub-d's and not the cps tool? I belive that the cps is better because you can go on and off with the smooth object and also the mirror and stich option is great.

Hey Kaz

You can do mirror attach, smooth, Proxy and all that stuff with Sd's, I have no reason to use CPS. Its always been called 'PMS' here at work, which means 'Poor Mans Subd' plugin. I think it was actually created with the Maya Complete user in mind a while ago because it didn't have subds in complete until v4. But now its built into Maya Complete as well. I've been working with SD's since my intro into Maya began a few years ago and I have not needed it. Its the artist that make the tools not the other way round

I always do a duplicate instance while I'm working on mirror stuff anyway as it makes the scene lighter too.

Anyway we all work in our own way thats best for us dont we?

Jango, I've been meaning to ask you this. What does MjPolytools do? I searched for it on google, and it only gave me a list of what it has in it.

Hi Peltra

Basically it allows you to select 1 edge and it will cut your faces,
It works in the 'Edge Loop' method which is ideal for modelling characters faces. It cuts thru your faces making them 4sided polys too, keeping it very clean. Only has one drawback, sometimes you need to use the hypergraph to get rid of its history as it stays in there sometimes even after deleting your history normally.

If you like I'll do a quick pic for you tnite so you can see a before and after.

Peltra

If you want or you can do it with the split poly tool and do each face one at a time. I have attached a couple of examples of loops. One is from the Sheriff Character (you can see where I started to change the mesh) and the other is the girl that is being done now. You can see the difference in the meshes straight away for both
