July/Aug - Noob - Skeksi

This will be my first challenge. Just finished the Cartoon Dog. I really want to do something good for this one. Since I'm a noob I'll have to keep it fairly simple but I really want to capture the theme. A frightened child in bed with covers drawn up to their eyes and a large clownlike figure overlooking him/her from the shadows of the room....moonlight in window and maybe a nightlight glowing near the bed. Too cliche? Concepts to come.

I wipped these together on my lunch break at work on a pocket notepad.....after i finished them I'm thinking of going along the lines of a combination of the two pics.

and this one...perhaps the angle of the second pic but with the clown at a window like in the first....moonlight shining behind him...a little nightlight glowing on the partially hidden face of the child under the covers....

Here's the beginings of the room....area where bed is going to be.....does it make sense to set the stage before working on the actors? Im still working on the whole concept but the room is still the same...at least I can move camera around for whatever angle i end up going with.

I get this in my Script Editor window:

"// Error: (Mayatomr.Export) : mental ray startup failed with errors //
// Info (Mayatomr): Aborted //"

I ran the cleanup tool after i did a Select All as well...but still same error...it renders with maya software but I have some lighting and glass effects im trying to get.

in regard to the error, I'm not positive, but it sounds like MR isn't installed properly, perhaps. Has it worked for you before?
