depth of field

Hi guys just wondering can someone give me a definition of depth of field in Maya is it a tool, I think it has something to do with rendering, any help would be appreciated

Its under your camera setting hit Crtl A adn scroll down till you see depth of feild.

so do you use it to give a specific effect to your scene?

You can make teh backgroud blury like in real life or the for ground if you want the back ground clear. Like a real camera or your eyes
