Yeah, maybe Ak wasnt the best idea for me...

I have done all the tutorials except for one which wouldnt work on my computer for some reason. I am also trying to make a TIE fighter, very simply. I have 3 pictures from google that I'm going to be using as skin(side-wing picture, front on picture, and from above) I have almost finished the UV map for the wings, but it is hard for noobs like me user added image.

Angalid: Your meaning I should start out with 4sided geometry and then smooth to a better level?

What do most people try to do as their first actual project(other than tutorials)?

I haven't seen your tie fighter yet but I don't think you're already ready to texture it yet.

Make sure all the faces on your models have 4 sides.

Im not texturing the model, not yet after what happened with ak(it sucked). Im just modelling, might not even texture, just have this one as a pure model to see what I need to differ in.

by the way, Gohan, what do you mean by "Make sure all of your faces have 4 sides."?

do you mean;
I have a cube, for example, and to get four sides for all of the faces, I just press the smooth button once and then each of the six faces now is made up of 4 themselves?

For starters:

1. When you smooth both of those, the one with 4 sides will look better.

2. Easier to animate.

You said, you have finished the tutorials coming along with Maya. Good !
Now search the net for other tutorials. www.learning-maya.com is a page which contains many tutorails sorted after their content: Modeling, Animation, Fluids, and so on. Search the site for any tutorail which is suitable and of which you think that you'll succeed. After you've done many of those tutorials start your own projects.
Regards...
Fubar.

I am about halfway through the screwdriver one and it is helping a lot. Thanks Fubar. Do you have any other good tutorials?
