Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

face building problems

Hi,
If someone could shed some light on this i would apprecaite it.
I am modeling a face and for some reason when i smooth it to see what it looks like, dark patches occur as can be seen below. i have never had this problem before so a bit confused.
also there is no obvious reason, the normals are all ok. there are no duplicate vertices either.
Thanks. user added image

it looks like the normals, try setting the normals to the faces, then hardening them, then softening them...
does this happen even without rendering?

Try reapplying your material. Just a thought.

it happens without rendering and there is no texture on it. i shall see what happens with the normals and softening and hardening to see if that works. thank you

From time to time, I'll get wierd things happening to my models from dissappearing faces, color splotches, transparency, etc and almost everytime, I fixed it be either reapplying the material or applying a new material (like blinn or lambert - not texture files). If that doesn't work then performing an auto UV map does the trick.

I've never seen your issue before though and so it could easily be something totally different like things that Joopson mentioned.

Good luck!

So what you are saying is that when you click on smooth, black spots come out of no where? and that they are no textures that you have applied?
