Okay!!! After a lot of hard work modeling and modeling again and going over that wrx tutorial and trying to learn how NURBS really work i got this to show for it. A long way to go but i think i have the basic shape - all c & c greatly appreciated!

hey tariqrf, i got this far by rebuilding this car more times than i can think! i have built and rebuilt till it makes me sick in the head and then rebuilt some more. i followed a thread in another forum and a guy made a mclaren lm in a couple of days i think... not me - i think this has been about a month slowly getting better and better - i've learned a lot about NURBS user added image

i was just in bed taking a little nap and i thought about this model and it came to me that with such an organic shape i'd like to give it a try modeling from a 1/4 NURBS sphere, adding isoparms and slowly inching my way toward the final shape - i've had success in this way with modeling a head and an advantage it could have is that when i split the model into seperate patches it might be more intuitive to stich them. on the other hand with more experience i'll probably have a better plan from the beginning...

just thoughts on nurbs mechanical modeling.

This project is going pretty slowly... I've been discouraged a lot but I think it's getting there. The problem is you get to this point where you have a nice shape but no plan as to how to get it to join to the other panels of the car. So you detach surfaces and try to find a way and lose that lovely curve. Then it's back to nudging cvs around trying and rebuilding surfaces til you get close to where you thought you had been. Rrr. user added image

On the up side the tires were an interesting interlude - they're poly - i made the pattern in nurbs, 15 degrees and then duplicated it 23 times rotating 15 degrees each and then joined them. Was left with 2 pieces because I couldn't join the last parts of the nurbs objects. Is this possible?

I converted to subds and then poly. that seemed to work better than converting straight to poly but that may have been due to some other glitch. Hm. Okay. here's the model.

and a back view...

i also had some problems getting the bevels to match on the underside of the car. Irittating. plus it's a bit wonky around where the windshield meets the hood - where the mirrors will go. But i have to get the body all smooth and stuck together before i can go trimming the details...

I don't know if this would help you a bit with your project... but at 3D-Palace.com there is a "Maya Jaguar XJ220 Car Tutorial" made with Polygons, in the Video Tutorial section... -->

I'm not sure however, if you have to be a member before you can download it... it's about 300 Mb and splitted up in 8 part's... the duration of it is about +/- 4 hours... there is also the making of an tire included... very good tutorial... :-)

thanks strarup - i'll check it out. i'm pretty set on making this car with nurbs however. i know i could make it with polygons but i want to master nurbs. user added image i'm stubborn that way.
