Creating light streaking effect in maya?

Hi,

I'm trying to create a light streaking effect like this:

https://www.popgadget.net/images/adidas_polar.jpg

But instead of the light coming from the movement of a body I want the streaks to be self contained and able to fly around a building, down corridors etc and eventually form up to create a kind of spherical logo made from these different colored light streaks. Does anyone have any hints or tips on how I might go about creating this kind of thing?

Any help appreciated!

Thanks

particles moving along a curve

i would help you more, but right now i can't quite remember how you get particles to emit and follow a curve, and i dont have Maya where i am at the moment

change the shader of the particles too, so they have that sort of glow you're after

Thanks for the suggestions, I found a tutorial in an old issue of 3D World that uses some custom scripting and glowing animated extrudes, looks very cool.
