Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

Is there any filtering on the file texture node? Does it look as blobby with another texture?

File size doesn't mean anything. It's all about the resolution of the image. Resolutions should be square, and multiples of 2, eg: 512, 1024, 2048, etc.

To me it looks like you are mapping a very small portion of the image over a large surface area. (I assume that's a wood texture, and the grain is too big for the object) Perhaps by scaled down UVs.

Open it in photoshop or your image editing program and check the size. The larger the UVs, the more of the texture will be covered over the object.
