Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Smoothing on render

I've seen some models where there's an option to smooth on render.
There was even a script to smooth the object.
Special thing here was you could uncheck things in the attribute editor to go back to the lowpoly object.

I know you can smooth an object, but that's permanent. No?
And hitting 3 give a preview of the smoothing.
But that's not what I've seen.

Any ideas how to set this up?
Thx!

As long as you do not delete history you can go back to the unsmoothed version of your model.

After applying a smooth, you will see a smooth node (polySmootFace)in the channel box. Setting divisions back to 0 will effectively unsmooth the object. Be very mindful not to inadvertently delete history on your smoothed object as once you do this you cannot get back. Also, modifying the geometry of the smoothed mesh can cause issues if you try to revert back.

Thanks for the usefull info and links! Really great!

Another Q:

How can you render smoothing set in 'Smooth Mesh'?
When I render the scene, it renders the low poly, not the smoothing.

How do I render with smoothing?
I've checked all, but without result.

Thx!

Just press the 3-key. That should all you need to do to render with the sooth preview. Unless you are using an older version of maya. I forget which version added the ability to render smooth preview.
