Textures and alphas

Doing a project for Uni, I am trying to build up some foliage in my scene I am using a tif file with an alpha channel, I attached the texture to colour attr but keep this message 'Error: (Mayatomr.Output) : while defining texture "file20:tex": failed to open texture file'

MR doesn't like your texture, it may a tiff with an unsupported compression (LZW I think) or maybe just out right corrupted. Trying opening it in an image editor and writing it out again. And restart Maya because I think MR will still have issues unless you flush it.

I never have issues using targa (TGA). Try that.

Sigh... I wish they would just get rid of the tiff "format". Tiff's are really just a container, meaning the internal data in the file has many different standards (or none at all), which makes them a huge pain in production, especially when you're using multiple applications. Use either png or targa.

You will probably want to convert everything to a map texture for mental ray.
Can get scripts off highend3d.

You will want to work with exr and convert to this format.
