Help!!! I dont understand what my ik is doing

Im almost done rigging a robotic character for class, again. But this time when i try to put ikSC on his fingures a large box formed around the ik. With the ik i can still adjust the angle of the root bone for the ik, but i can not adjust the angle of the middle joint at all.

Does anyone know what this box is?

...And do you know how to disable it, or at least make it so i can use the ik properly?
