extrude tool issue = manipulator gone, need it back

i am trying to extrude an edge and i get the xyz thing and not the manipulator to extrude it out normally. The xyz yellow thing extrudes in all direction and i need more control cos sometimes i only need to extrude in x-axis, etc. How can i fix this?

using maya 2015, where clicking on "extrude options tickbox" take me to Modeling Toolkit automatically, and i set extrude options there.

Not really sure what you mean but have you tried pressing W and/or R after pressing extrude?
