How to do a turbine effect?

I have modeled a turbine as practice for a short I am goin to produce when I get the software, time and skill. The question I want to know is how am I able to get the heat ripple coming out the back of the turbine, like you would seee out the back of an aeoroplae at the airport. I though of doing an accelerated smoke dynamic with high trasparency, would this work?

Thanks for the feedback, I'm currently experimenting with the smoke effect but the threads were very useful!
